From Cairns to Whitsundays Islands: Sun, Beach...and mosquitoes

Here we are in Cairns, North of the East Coast !!! It is our start for this new 6 week road trip!!!

We start with a diving day on the great barrier reef! Did you know that the great barrier is the only “living being” (yes, corals are not plants but animals) that you can see from the space? The barrier is more than 2500 km long… During our 3 dives we saw beautiful hard and soft corals, colourful fishes, a baby shark, a turtle… It is so incredible!! When you see this beauty, you better understand why it is important to protect our environment!!!

We then move to Cape Tribulation: the place where the rainforest meets the reef! But forget about swimming: the waters (fresh and salted) are full of crocodiles! But in the rainforest you also find snakes, insects, spiders, cassowaries (a big Australian bird almost like an ostrich), wallabies… and a lot of mosquitoes!!! But it was really nice to walk under the shadow of the trees and to swim in the cold waterfall water (here there is no crocs…)

We then met Alfredo, a Spanish guy who travelled with us 10 days!!! Together we swam (of course), we walked in the rainforest (but the boys were afraid of spiders…)

and we visited Magnetic Island: there we saw a wild (but cute) koala and we had a really close encounter with the Australian wildlife: snakes, lizards, baby crocs, turtle, koala and lorikeets!!! That was really nice!!!

Alfredo shared the ride with us until Airlie Beach: the beach in front of the Whitsundays! Whitsunday Islands is an archipelago composed by 74 islands and on Whitsunday Island you can find the prettiest beach of the world (Whitehaven beach). To have a better idea about how it looks, we did a scenic flight above the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Yann Artus Bertrand just loses his monopole: We also saw the heart island! But do you know that it is …an animal? Actually the Heart Island is an island made of coral and depending on the tide the Heart is above or under the water level. We were there at low tide so we could see it above the ocean!

Seeing the beach from the sky is nice, but it is better to see it from the ground. So we did 2 2 day cruise and we could swim on the most beautiful beach on the world! We were not disappointed: turquoise water, white and thin sand… We love it!!! So we couldn’t resist taking a lot of pictures!!!

And here we are already: it’s time to say good bye to Alfredo who is going to Hawaii now. But we will continue our trip with 6 French we met on the boat and also with Meiggy and Rudy: our 2 new travel mates!!!
