After our Texan trip and our crossing in New Mexico, we drove to Arizona to admire one of the wonders of Nature that we expected since the beginning of the trip: the Grand Canyon!! Along the way, we even had a chance to drive on the famous route 66. The route, going from Chicago to Los Angeles through eight states was the first paved transcontinental highway and Americans nicknamed it the "Mother Road". But since 1985 this route was "downgraded" and changed its name. So we didn’t drive on the route sixty-six but on the "historic" 66 road !!! It's not bad .. And this is the perfect symbol of our American road trip (well, okay, we don’t have a nice Camaro ... but it's the thought that counts right ?? !!)
Well, jut to say that to experience the US you have to drive, drive and drive again!!! The landscapes go and change !!! And now we come to the Grand Canyon: a spectacular and unique landscape !!! English "Grand" not only means "great" but also splendid, huge, grandiose ... and we understand why. We parked the car, put on our jackets (because it is now -5), went for a map at the information center and then headed to the viewpoints ... and there .... Wow, a canyon of incredible immensity before us! (Note that the canyon stretches over 450 km, it is 30km wide and 2,000 meters deep at the lowest point.) We discovered the geological layers of different colors and tried to imagine the Colorado work to achieve this! 1.7 billion years of history are revealed in front of us and we are so small facing this colossal work! Just like in Iguazu, we remained speechless to contemplate the changing colors, searching Colorado, simply soak the place. In addition we were lucky; it snowed a few days ago so the path was white but not the canyon and there were very few people ... We could admire the canyon with all our soul !!
Often we speak of the highlights of the places that we visit, but for the Grand Canyon, there is nothing to say ... We were captivated by every centimeter of this majestic place. We left Earth for 2 days. Because of the snow, we could not go down into the Canyon (because the tracks were frozen and dangerous) but this is only a postponement ... a place like this deserves necessarily a second time !!!
We had no trouble getting up for sunrise (despite - 13 degrees in the morning) as to discover the landscape by the light of day, gives a different terrain to the Canyon! We liked to let our minds escape by watching this show ...
and as we did not have enough, we broke our piggy bank and flew by helicopter over the canyon! 45 minutes of pure happiness in a Eurocopter beside the driver. Wahouuu! Colorado has shown its meanders, Canyon blew upon us its entrails, and the sun was dressed in his finest gilding ... A visit that we won’t soon forget !!!
So it is with stars in our eyes that we now leave for Las Vegas !!!!
