New York: THE place to visit!!!!

My Valentine's Day Gift! A common desire! A dream for many people! A stressful day where everything goes to 100 mph for some others ... I speak of course of NEW YORK!!!! After 22 months of travel, we are there... and during the 8 days we spent there we reinforced our belief that New York is a great city!!! So come and bite the Big Apple!

New York: THE place to visit!!!!

Like any good tourist who arrives in this huge city, the first thing we did (after dropping our bag of course) was to go to Times Square. Times Square is a neighbourhood in the heart of Manhattan where the neon signs put on a show. The place is called "Times Square" after the installation of the newspaper New York Times in the years 1900 (1904 to be precise). This is really the emblem of the city that never sleeps ... and when we got there, we were not disappointed! Our eyes did not know where to turn, yellow, blue, red ... Wahouuu !!! Now the newspaper is not here anymore but many retailers have captured the heart of Manhattan ... and we loved to visit M & M's World (especially for tasting!). Toys R'Us closed, so we did not get a chance to see the big wheel or the Statue of Liberty made of Lego but who cares, Times Square was up to our expectations!

And to better enjoy the city and its size, nothing is better than to get high! Please note, photos below are breath-taking! First we went to the Empire State Building ... the famous skyscraper climbed by King Kong! It is the second largest monument of New York (381 meters without antenna or 443 with antenna) and it is of course the icon (or rather one of the icons) emblematic of the city! From the top of the 86th floor we had a nice view of lower Manhattan (the business district) and we could even see the Statue of Liberty! Gorgeous views day and night ... but the wind is icy at the top!! We still preferred the view from the "Top of the Rock" (on top of the Rockefeller Building) ... because from there you can see the Empire State Building!

Brooklyn side was also impressing by the view of Manhattan and the first bridge that connected Brooklyn to Manhattan! We therefore crossed on foot and then walked around the side of Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange (where all the stock runs!!!).

It is also in lower Manhattan that we found One World and "Ground Zero". For the youngest of you that do not may mean much but Ground Zero is now a memorial remembering the twin towers of the World Trade Centre that collapsed September 9, 2001 following terrorist attacks. The two towers were replaced by two huge fountains and the names of the 3,000 victims are inscribed in marble. One World is a tower built next to honour the ancient towers. It was very moving for us to find ourselves there! September 11, 2001 we were in school, and like all people with access to a TV we saw live the planes crashing into the towers and the buildings collapse. We were not in Paris January 7, 2015 or November 13, 2015 but be there today it was like a strong thought for all the victims of terrorism and also a victory over hatred ... We visited the museum that chronicles the course of the attacks and after! Out of respect we did not take any photograph (but it was allowed)! We discovered certain elements and emerged sad, angry but with the desire even stronger to live every second of life!

We also went to the foot of the Liberty Leading the People (more commonly known as the Statue of Liberty). This copper lady was made by Bartholdi and Gustave Eiffel who made the internal structure. So yes, everyone knows that it is a gift from France to the United States to celebrate 100 years of the US Declaration of Independence but also a critique of the French monarchy. Indeed, in the 1870s, almost 100 years after the French revolution, Napoleon III is in power and republic does not really exist. Bartholdi and many of these compatriots have had enough and appreciated the United States who abolished slavery at the end of the Civil War. It was therefore the idea of offering the Statue of Liberty to the United States as a snub to France. It was during a trip to America that Bartholdi decided the location of the Statue: Liberty Island is in fact the first thing he saw when arriving by boat. The statue was then erected on the pedestal and inaugurated on October 28, 1886. This lady not facing Manhattan but the old continent (Europe) was for a long time a symbol of hope for thousands of migrants arriving by boat after crossing the Atlantic in search of a better life! As we had not booked we were not able to climb in and we admired her from outside!! It is true that this Statue of copper (which gives it its green colour) inspires Liberty!!

Next to Liberty Island is Ellis Island. This is where the migrants arrived before setting foot on the American continent. For most, crossing the border was a formality but for some it could have taken some time or even meant a return to the place they were coming from!

In this huge city we enjoyed public parks. The best known and largest is of course Central Park. It's super nice but in winter without leaves in the trees is still a little gray!!! The "High Line" is a "suspended" park that was laid out on an old line subway in height! It's truly pleasant! There are also Madison Square and its "flat" building... and many other smaller or larger in the whole city!

Our stay in New York was also an opportunity to celebrate our 7-year anniversary!!! We first went to see the musical The Lion King; it was more than magical!!! We continued the evening at a restaurant... So of course the bubbles were on hand!!!

We really fell in love with this city and there is something for everyone: from the very expensive international cuisine or cheap ones, trendy places or parks where it is good to chill, diverse and varied museums, shopping to no end... and so much more…Well New York is New York; we love it!!!!!
